Recipe Using Martha White Buttermilk Cornbread. Whisk egg in medium bowl. Crisco original no stick cooking spray 2 cups martha white self rising white corn meal mix 1 1 3 cups buttermilk or 1 1 3 cups milk 1 4 cup crisco pure vegetable oil or 1 4 cup crisco all vegetable shortening melted.
The corn also acts as a natural sweetener though you can add extra sugar if you like especially sweet cornbread. If too thick add 1 to 2 tablespoons additional buttermilk. Grease 12 muffin cup or cornsticks pan.
Bake at 450 degrees for 15 to 20 minutes or until golden brown.
Serve this cornbread alongside a spicy chili beans or greens. Cooked sausage into prepared batter. Pour batter into skillet. Many people like to crumble their cornbread in a glass and fill it with cold milk.
